A clear winter morning can reveal an unwelcome surprise: water beading on the inside of your windows, wet sills, or even a cloudy patch trapped between panes. Window condensation causes are not always the same, and the location of that moisture tells you a lot about whether you need a simple humidity adjustment or a closer look at your windows.
For Halifax Regional Municipality homeowners, this is especially common during cold snaps. Warm indoor air meets a cold glass surface, and the water vapor in that air turns into liquid. A little temporary moisture can be normal. Persistent condensation, dripping water, peeling trim, or fog between panes deserves attention before it turns into damage you can see.
Why windows collect condensation
Air always holds some moisture. Cooking supper, taking showers, running the dishwasher, drying clothes, and even breathing all add water vapor to your home. The warmer the air is, the more moisture it can hold.
When warm, humid indoor air touches a window surface that is colder than the air's dew point, the moisture changes into droplets. Think of a cold drink sweating on a summer day. Your window is doing much the same thing, just with the temperature difference reversed in winter.
Older, single-pane windows and windows with poor insulating performance have colder interior glass, so they are more likely to collect moisture. But even new windows can show condensation if indoor humidity is high enough or air circulation around the glass is restricted.
Window condensation causes depend on where it appears
Before assuming your windows have failed, look closely at where the moisture sits. Interior, exterior, and between-the-pane condensation each point to different conditions.
Condensation on the room side of the glass

Condensation between glass panes
Fogging, droplets, or a milky haze between panes is different. Insulated glass units are sealed around the edges and often filled with insulating gas. When that seal fails, humid air can enter the space between the panes. The result is moisture you cannot wipe away from either side.
A failed seal reduces the window's insulating performance and affects its appearance. In some cases, a glass unit can be replaced. If the frame, hardware, weatherstripping, and overall window are also showing their age, full replacement may be the more sensible long-term option.
Common sources of excess indoor humidity
Many homes hold more moisture than their owners realize. Newer, tighter homes can be especially prone to it because less air naturally escapes through gaps and cracks. That is good for energy efficiency, but it means ventilation matters more.
Watch for patterns around everyday moisture sources. Long showers, frequent stovetop cooking, unvented gas appliances, humidifiers set too high, aquariums, and indoor clothes drying can all raise humidity. A damp basement or crawl space can also feed moisture into the living areas above.
Window coverings play a role, too. Heavy curtains, tightly closed blinds, and furniture placed directly in front of heat registers can trap cool air next to the glass. The room may feel comfortable while the concealed window surface gets cold enough to sweat.
Seasonal changes matter. A humidity level that feels fine when it is 45 degrees outside may be too high when temperatures drop well below freezing. The colder it is outdoors, the lower your indoor humidity often needs to be to avoid window condensation.
What repeated condensation can damage
A few droplets that dry quickly are usually more annoying than dangerous. Repeated moisture is another story. Water can soak into wood sills and trim, stain paint, swell drywall, and create conditions where mold may grow. Over time, the damage may extend beyond the window itself.
This is why wiping the glass is not a complete fix. It protects the immediate surface, but the goal is to reduce the source of moisture and keep the window warm enough that condensation does not keep returning.
Pay particular attention to black spotting, musty odors, soft wood, paint that bubbles near the window, and puddles on the sill. Those signs call for a prompt inspection. The earlier you identify the cause, the easier it is to protect the surrounding finishes.
Practical ways to reduce interior condensation
Start with the easy, everyday changes. Run bathroom fans during showers and for a while afterward. Use the range hood when cooking, especially when boiling water. If your dryer is vented indoors or its exterior vent is blocked, correct that issue as soon as possible.
A hygrometer is a simple, useful tool for checking indoor humidity. There is no single perfect setting for every home because outdoor temperatures, home construction, and ventilation vary. In winter, many homeowners need to lower humidity as the temperature falls. If windows are wet every morning, turn down the humidifier or pause it for several days and see whether the issue improves.
Keep air moving around windows by opening blinds for part of the day, pulling curtains back from the glass, and making sure heat registers are not blocked. Use ceiling fans carefully during winter to circulate air without making rooms feel drafty.
If moisture seems concentrated in one area, look for a local issue. A bathroom fan may be weak or venting into an attic instead of outdoors. A basement dehumidifier may be needed. A window that feels much colder than the others may have a failed seal, worn weatherstripping, or an installation issue that needs professional attention.
When the window itself is the problem
Windows do not last forever, particularly in a coastal climate where wind, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and salty air can be hard on exterior materials. Condensation can be one signal among several that a window is no longer performing as it should.
Look beyond the water on the glass. Drafts, difficult operation, rattling frames, cracked caulking, visible rot, water stains around the opening, and fog between panes all strengthen the case for repair or replacement. A window that is consistently cold to the touch compared with similar windows may also be losing too much heat.
Replacement windows can help by providing better insulated glass, improved weather seals, and a more dependable fit at the opening. They will not solve a major indoor humidity problem by themselves, though. The best result comes from pairing a well-installed window with appropriate ventilation and moisture control.
That balance is worth getting right. You want a home that holds heat through a Halifax winter without trapping so much moisture that windows and finishes suffer.
